Catholic Charities Sallisaw
In Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Catholic Charities is working every day to ensure families in need have access to nourishing, quality food. As part of Catholic Charities of Eastern Oklahoma, the largest distributor of food to individuals in need across the state, the Sallisaw outreach location plays a vital role in addressing hunger in its local community and beyond. Managed by Pam Wemhane, the Sallisaw location is supported by a small but dedicated team of three employees and 39 volunteers. Together, they serve a growing number of clients who visit monthly to receive approximately a week’s worth of food for their families. In addition to the food pantry, Catholic Charities also operates mobile pantries that deliver food to communities throughout Eastern Oklahoma. For more than 10 years, Catholic Charities Sallisaw has participated in the Save-A-Label program. Volunteers collect Best Choice Family of Brands labels at home, church members mail them in, and even pantry clients help by saving labels from their own purchases. The labels, often gathered from Harps and 10-Box stores, are turned into funds that help stock the pantry shelves. “As the number of new clients continues to grow, so does the need for quality food,” Wemhane shared. “We use the funds from Save-A-Label to purchase more food for our pantry, and we try to choose Best Choice products first whenever possible.” Every label collected, every donation made, and every volunteer hour helps Catholic Charities continue its mission of feeding the hungry. With community support, they are able to meet increasing needs and provide hope, one meal at a time.
